When discussing possible ideas for our music video we found that we all liked the idea of animation. Thinking about it logically we decided we don’t have the time to construct a cartoon like video so instead we looked at videos that used objects and drawings to represent locations and items such as in Coldplay’s Strawberry Swing where chalk drawings are used to signify the location. Although we really liked this video we thought it looked like it would be too time costly and incredibly difficult to recreate! I then trawled through my iTunes looking for songs that I classed as alternative before looking up their music videos until I found

Mystery Jets – Young Love.

This video rather than using computer generated animation uses objects such as a rug that looks like grass and the whole video is shot with the band lying down and they use, what I assume to be poles, to create the image of them moving. This is the kind of style we were looking for, something fun, creative and most importantly achievable. I then did some research into the director James Copeman to see where the influence for his videos came from. I discovered he comes from a background in Motion-Graphics and so most of his videos have his own imagery drawn on top of the film to form a creative vintage look. After researching into more of his music videos I found a similar style in Laura Marling’s – Ghosts, Emiliana Torrini’s – Big Jumps and The Voluntary Butler Scheme’s – Trading Things In, a video we had previously looked at (and liked). Another idea that we had looked at earlier was filming a band from different angles and in his music videos such as You Me At Six – Kiss and Tell, RazorlightBurberry Blue Eyes and Biffy Clyro – Mountains this is the approach he has taken. All of these bands come into our chosen genre of Alternative and also his videos encompass what we want to achieve from our music video so it looks like James Copeman could be a major influence in our production!
