Music Genre: Alternative
In the 1980s the term alternative was used to describe iconoclastic music that did not fit into the mainstream genres of the time and did not intend on doing so. They were most commonly artists which had not been signed by a record label however in the early 90’s due to the availability of recording studios increasing rapidly more artists begun to create a similar sound therefore the genre alternative became more mainstream. It has a similar sound to Rock as it tends to use the same instruments however alternative music doesn’t tend to have as strong a back beat and has a less ‘polished finish’.
Meiko - Under My Bed
- In this video I found the representation of women is varied and considerably different to the others I have looked at so far.
- Meiko is dominant as she is positioned on the bed whilst everyone else appears to come from underneath it; this places her in a position of authority.
- The majority of the women are modestly dressed mainly in the colour black which has connotations of mystery. This could symbolise that women have more to them than the side presented ordinarily in the media, that of promiscuity.
- Despite this some are wearing the typical short, tight dresses and behaving in a ‘girlish’ manner.
- On of the females is performing martial arts. To me this symbolises that women don’t need a man to protect them, they are perfectly capable of defending for themselves.
