Producing album artwork for our artist is one of the ancillary tasks for our coursework therefore I have begun to look at other artists album covers within our chosen genre, alternative, to make sure we will be adhering to conventions furthermore to help inspire and influence us.

The first album cover I have analysed is Imogen Heaps Headlock.

• Imogen’s eyes are closed and averted from the camera allowing the audience to form a voyeuristic relationship with her.
• The idea of voyeurism originates from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytical theories which refer to the notion that erotic pleasure can be gained from looking at a sexual object, preferably when the object is unaware.
• Her dress style and appearance are extravagant and colourful in order for her to draw attention to herself through not adhering to the conventions of a ‘girly girl’. This is mirrored in the music she produces for the idea of alternative music is to break the conventions.
• As her style is reflective of the alternative genre it may help to attract her target audience who may wish to replicate her image.
• The fact she features on the album cover could signify that her image is representative and part of her music style.
• The colouring and capitalism of her name brings attention to it thus highlighting the fact it’s her album. Despite this it is not the main focus of the album cover.
• The background is serene and peaceful which reflects her facial expression however it emphasises her flamboyant image.
